Is it safe to upload a bank statement to an online converter or AI chatbot?
A bank statement shows your name, address, account number, balances and every payment you made. Uploading it to a converter, accounting software or an AI chatbot gives that service a copy, so whether it is safe depends on what that service says it does with files. Quietools converts bank statement PDFs to CSV inside your browser: 0 bytes of the file are sent to a server.
What you hand over when you upload a statement
One monthly statement usually contains:
- Your full name and postal address
- Your account number, and often a sort code or routing number
- Opening, closing and running balances
- Every payee, with dates and amounts, which shows where you shop, who pays you and what you pay for
None of this is a reason never to upload. It is a reason to know where the file goes.
Five questions to ask before you upload
- Where is the file processed? On the service's servers, or in your browser?
- Can people see it? Some services say staff may check results.
- How long is it kept? Look for a stated period and a way to delete it.
- Is it used to train models? And can you turn that off?
- Does the page answer these at all? If the help page is silent, you can ask the service before uploading.

If you paste a statement into an AI chatbot
- Check your plan's data settings first. On ChatGPT personal plans, OpenAI says model training is on by default and can be turned off in Settings › Data Controls.
- Consider a Temporary Chat. OpenAI says these aren't used for training but may be kept for up to 30 days.
- Share less. Most questions ("what did I spend on groceries?") need only dates, descriptions and amounts, not your name, address, account number or balances.
- Convert first, then trim. Quietools turns the PDF into a table in your browser. Remove the Balance column with the ✕, edit descriptions that contain card or reference numbers, and download only the rows you want to share.
How to check whether a converter uploads your file
You don't have to take any converter's word for it, including ours. Your browser shows every request a page makes:
- Open the converter page in Chrome or Firefox and press F12 (Windows) or Cmd+Option+I (Mac).
- Click the Network tab and clear the list.
- Convert a statement, or a sample file, as you normally would.
- Look for a request, usually a POST, whose size is close to your file. That is an upload.
On Bank Statement PDF to CSV your file does not appear in the list. The only outside request is Cloudflare's cookie-free page-view counter (to cloudflareinsights.com), which carries page-load data, not your file. The page's Content Security Policy only allows connections to Quietools itself and that counter.

After converting, where the CSV goes is up to you. Importing it into accounting software or a spreadsheet sends its rows there: see Xero and QuickBooks or Google Sheets.

It depends on the service. Uploading gives that service a copy of everything on the statement, so read what it says about where the file is processed, who can see it, how long it is kept and how to delete it. Quietools avoids the question by converting the PDF in your browser without uploading it.
Is it safe to upload a bank statement to ChatGPT?
